Socks, socks and more socks!

Socks are all the rage this year. And as a response to the renewed interest in sock knitting/crocheting, Lion Brand and Red Heart have both released sock yarns which are more than just sock yarns!

So let’s see what all the fuss is about…

Lion Brand ‘Sock-Ease’

Following in the same great tradition of ‘Wool-Ease’ and ‘Cotton-Ease’, Lion Brand has now produced ‘Sock-Ease’.

Sock-Ease ball

Sock-Ease is a ‘traditional fingering-weight sock yarn designed to produce flowing color patterns in a sophisticated palette. Great for socks, scarves and other accessories, Sock-Ease is finished with aloe vera to soften your hands as you knit or crochet’.

RRP is US$10 per 100g ball and one ball is enough to do one pair of socks.  The yarn is comprised of 75% wool and 25% nylon (for stretch).

Red Heart ‘Heart and Sole’ (sorry, no pic on their website yet)

Like Lion Brand’s ‘Sock-Ease’, ‘Heart and Sole’ also contains aloe vera which also helps the yarn glide smoothly on needles and hooks. Yarn knits up in striped or Fair Isle patterns and solid colors. Ideal for unique home decor, accessories, colorful kids sweaters and of course, socks! 70% wool superwash, 30% nylon.

It comes in a 50g ball for US$4.99.  Not sure if you need to buy two balls for one pair of socks – making it equivalent to Lion Brand’s price of $9.99.

Now for the good stuff…patterns!

So, you’ve gone and bought some sock yarn, now what do you do with it?  Most socks are knitted, but if you’re a crocheter (like me), then you’d want some crocheted sock patterns, right?

Here’s a few to get you started…

Of course, if you don’t like any of these patterns, there’s heaps more at Knitting Pattern Central and Crochet Pattern Central.

Do you have a favourite sock yarn?  If so, do tell!  We’d love to read your comments.

Happy Stitching!
